Scopes Monkey Trial
The Scopes Monkey Trial was a trial about the teachings of evolution and christianity in public schools. In 1921, William Jennings Bryan became leader of anti-evolution movement, and during these movements he gave speeches entitled "The Menace of Darwinism" and "The Bible and its Enemies." On January 21, 1925 Rep. John Butler proposes the Butler Bill which prohibits the teaching of "
any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals." On January 27, 1925 the Tennessee House of Reps approve the law 71 to 5 vote. On July 10, 1925 the trial begins and opens with prayer. On July 21, 1925, the last day of the trial, the jury finds scopes guilty and he is fined $100.
